The number of deaths linked to Covid-19 has reached 6,524 in Bangladesh with the registration of 37 more casualties over the previous 24 hours till Thursday.

Of the new deceased, 25 are men and 12 are women. Among the total dead, 5,007 or 76.75 percent are men while 1,517 or 23.25 percent are women.

Besides, 2,292 new infections from coronavirus, officially known as Sars-CoV-2 which causes Covid-19, were reported during the period to take the total count to 456,438.

Currently, there are 78,461 active cases in the country. 

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) disclosed the information through a press release in the afternoon.

As per the press release, 2,274 more patients recuperated in the last 24 hours to take the total recoveries in the country to 371,453. 

During the period, 17,052 samples were tested in 118 labs across the country. With this, a total of 2,713,202 samples have so far been tested in the country.

The positivity rate — an indicator of the prevalence of the disease — was recorded at 13.44 percent in the last 24 hours while the overall positivity rate is 16.82 percent.

The recovery rate in Bangladesh stands at 81.38 percent.

Bangladesh has one of the lowest case fatality rates or CFR, which measures deaths among Covid-19 patients, at 1.43 percent.

On Wednesday, the country reported 39 deaths and 2,156 infections from coronavirus after testing 16,001 samples with a positivity rate of 13.47 percent.

Bangladesh reported its first three coronavirus cases on March 8 last while the first death on March 18.

Meanwhile, total coronavirus cases around the world have jumped to 60,719,957 as of 10am on Thursday.

Besides, the death toll from the virus has reached 1,426,823 globally, according to data collated by tracking website Worldometer. 

Of the currently infected 17,261,741 patients, 17,157,707 are in mild condition while 104,034 are in serious or critical condition.

So far, 42,031,393 people have made recovery from the disease in different countries.

The US is the worst-hit country with highest cases and deaths in the world at 13,137,962 and 268,219 respectively while India has 2nd highest cases of 9,266,705 and third highest fatalities of 135,261 and Brazil has 2nd highest deaths of 170,799 and third highest cases of 6,166,898.
