Did you know? Variants are different versions of a virus that are expected to occur over time. CDC uses the National SARS-CoV-2 Strain Surveillance program to find and track variants of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Through the National SARS-CoV-2 Strain Surveillance program, state health departments and other public health agencies regularly send SARS-CoV-2 samples to CDC. Our scientists then study the virus’s genetic material and can see mutations, or changes in the virus.
