Bangladesh reported highest-ever deaths and infections from the coronavirus in the last 24 hours till Wednesday.

Coronavirus fatalities have risen to 269 with record 19 new deaths during the period.

Besides, record 1,162 more Covid-19 cases were reported in the country in the last 24 hours, taking the total to 17,822.

The uptick in both deaths and cases follows an increase in tests with highest 7,900 carried out during the period.

These were the sharpest rise in both deaths and infections from coronavirus in the country since the first three cases were reported on March.

Bangladesh on Monday reported highest 1,034 Covid-19 cases while reported highest 15 deaths on April 17.

Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, additional director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), came up with the disclosure in the daily online health bulletin at the Management Information System (MIS) in the afternoon. 

She said 214 more patients recovered from Covid-19 disease in the last 24 hours, taking the number of people making recovery to 3,361.

Prof Nasima said 7,900 samples were tested in 41 labs across the country in the last 24 hours. With this, a total of 144,538 tested in the country.

On Tuesday, Bangladesh recorded 11 more deaths from coronavirus and 969 new cases.

Meanwhile, the global death toll from coronavirus has reached 292,816 as of Wednesday morning.

It has so far infected 4,340,058 people globally, according to Worldometer.

Of the currently infected 2,445,087 patients, 2,398,745 are in mild condition, which is 98 percent, while 46,342 or 2 percent are in serious condition.

So far, 1,602,155 people have recovered from COVID-19.

The US is the hardest-hit with the highest number of infections and deaths at 1,408,636 and 83,425 respectively.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic on March 11.

The coronavirus is affecting 212 countries and territories around the world and two international conveyances.
