Bangladesh has recorded its highest daily surge in deaths from coronavirus for the 2nd consecutive day since the outbreak began in the country.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported 42 deaths in the past 24 hours till Monday, taking the death toll in the country to 930.

Of the new deceased, 33 are men while nine are women.

Besides, confirmed coronavirus cases have jumped to 68,504 with the detection of 2,735 more infections during the period.

This is the joint biggest jump in coronavirus deaths since the first death was recorded on March 18. Earlier on Sunday, record 42 deaths were registered in the country.

DGHS Additional Director General Prof Dr Nasima Sultana came up with the disclosure in the daily online health bulletin in the afternoon.

She said 657 more patients recovered from COVID-19 disease in the last 24 hours, taking the number of people making recovery to 14,560.

Prof Nasima said 12,944 samples were tested in 52 labs across the country during the period. With this, a total of 410,931 samples have so far been tested in the country.

In comparison with the tests conducted in the last 24 hours, the infection rate is 21.13 percent, she said.

The DGHS additional director general also said against the total number of detected cases, the recovery rate is 21.15 while mortality rate is 1.36.

On Sunday, Bangladesh recorded record 42 deaths from coronavirus and 2,743 cases.

Meanwhile, coronavirus cases around the world have reached 7,091,634 as of Monday morning.

Besides, the global death toll from coronavirus has now stood at 406,192, according to Worldometer.

Of the currently infected 3,224,381 patients, 3,170,628 are in mild condition while 53,753 are in serious or critical condition.

So far, 3,461,061 people have made recovery from the disease in different countries.

The US is the worst-hit country with highest cases and deaths in the world at 2,007,449 and 112,469 respectively while Brazil has the 2nd highest cases at 691,962 and the UK 2nd highest death toll at 40,542.
