Bangladesh on Wednesday recorded the sharpest daily spike in coronavirus cases yet since the outbreak began in the country.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) registered 3,190 cases in the last 24 hours to take the tally to 74,865.

Besides, the death toll from coronavirus has jumped past 1,000 to reach 1,012 with the deaths of 37 more Covid-19 patients during the period.

Of the new deceased, 33 are men while four are women.

This is the biggest jump in coronavirus cases in the country since the first three cases were reported on March 8. Previous highest 3,171 cases were registered in the country on Tuesday.

With this, Bangladesh has also recorded over 3,000 coronavirus cases in a single day for the 2nd consecutive day.

The uptick in the number of new infections follows an increase in tests with highest 15,965 carried out in the last 24 hours against Tuesday’s 14,664.

DGHS Additional Director General Prof Dr Nasima Sultana came up with the disclosure in the daily online health bulletin in the afternoon.

She said 563 more patients recovered from COVID-19 disease in the last 24 hours, taking the number of people making recovery to 15,900.

Prof Nasima said highest 15,965 samples were tested in 55 labs across the country during the period. With this, a total of 441,560 samples have so far been tested in the country.

In comparison with the tests conducted in the last 24 hours, the infection rate is 21.98 percent, she said.

The DGHS additional director general also said against the total number of detected cases, the recovery rate is 21.24 while mortality rate is 1.35.

On Tuesday, Bangladesh recorded 45 deaths from coronavirus and 3,171 cases.

Meanwhile, the global death toll from coronavirus has reached 413,731 as of Wednesday morning.

Besides, it has so far infected 7,323,516 people around the world, according to Worldometer.

Of the currently infected 3,305,892 patients, 3,251,869 are in mild condition while 53,023 are in serious or critical condition.

So far, 3,603,893 people have made recovery from the disease in different countries.

The US is the worst-hit country with highest cases and deaths in the world at 2,045,549 and 114,148 respectively while Brazil has the 2nd highest cases at 742,084 and the UK 2nd highest death toll at 40,883.
