The death toll from coronavirus in Bangladesh has crossed 8,000 reaching 8,003 with the 22 virus casualties reported during the last 24 hours till Saturday.

Of the new deceased, 17 are men and five are women. Among the total dead, 6,064 are men while 1,939 are women.

Besides, 436 more infections were registered during the period to take the national caseload to 531,326.

Currently, there are 47,424 active cases in the country.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) disclosed the information through a press release in the afternoon.

As per the press release, 338 more people recuperated from Covid-19 in the past 24 hours to take total recoveries in the country to 475,899. 

The recovery rate also stands at 89.57 per cent.

During the period, 11,115 samples were tested in 200 labs across the country. With this, a total of 3,541,389 samples have so far been tested in the country.

The positivity rate — an indicator of the prevalence of the disease — was recorded at 3.12 per cent in the last 24 hours while the overall positivity rate is 15 per cent

Bangladesh has one of the lowest case fatality rates or CFR, which measures deaths among Covid-19 patients, at 1.51 per cent.

On Friday, the country recorded 15 deaths and 619 infections from coronavirus after testing 14,846 samples with a positivity rate of 4.17 per cent.

Meanwhile, total global deaths from coronavirus have surged to 2,116,336 as of Saturday morning.

Besides, the virus has so far sickened 98,743,848 people around the world, according to data collated by tracking website Worldometer.

Of the currently infected 25,710,055 patients, 25,598,757 are in mild condition while 111,270 are in serious or critical condition.

So far, 70,917,457 Covid-19 patients have made recovery worldwide.

The US is the worst-hit country with highest cases and deaths in the world at 25,390,042 and 424,177 respectively while India has 2nd highest cases of 10,640,544 and third highest fatalities of 153,221 and Brazil has 2nd highest deaths of 215,299 and third highest cases of 8,755,133.
