A new CDC report finds that a single bar opening event in Illinois in February 2021 led to a COVID-19 outbreak in the community among household members, long-term care residents and staff, and school athletes. This led to 46 cases, hospitalization of a long-term care resident, and a school closure affecting 650 children. Bars play a role in the spread of COVID-19 in communities because of limited mask use while eating and drinking, especially when physical distancing is not observed. Having takeout at home is the safest way to support restaurants and bars. If you choose to go, getting vaccinated, sitting outdoors, wearing a mask as much as possible, and staying at least 6 feet from others can help reduce the risk. Learn more: bit.ly/MMWR4521.
