Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), a condition in which kidney function has permanently declined and life-saving renal replacement therapy is needed, are at high risk for illness and death during the COVID-19 pandemic. A new MMWR finds there were as many as 10,316 more deaths than expected among nearly 800,000 patients with ESRD during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. ESRD patients, including those taking immunosuppressive medications, should talk with their healthcare provider about the need for additional protective measures after vaccination.
