A new CDC report finds that a single bar opening event in Illinois in February 2021 led to a COVID-19 outbreak in the community among household members, long-term care residents and staff, and school athletes.
This led to 46 cases, hospitalization of a long-term care resident, and a school closure affecting 650 children. Bars play a role in the spread of COVID-19 in communities because of limited mask use while eating and drinking, especially when physical distancing is not observed. Having takeout at home is the safest way to support restaurants and bars.
