As the world continued to see highest number of coronavirus cases every day, Bangladesh has also no respite from it.

In the last 24 hours till Saturday, it recorded 1,320 new infections from coronavirus, officially known as Sars-CoV-2 which causes Covid-19, to take the total to 407,684.

Besides, the death toll from the highly contagious virus has reached 5,923 after it took the lives of 18 more people during the period.

Of the new deceased, 12 are men and six are women. Among the total dead, 4,553 or 76.87 percent are men while 1,370 or 23.13 percent are women.

Currently, there are 77,616 active cases in the country.

Bangladesh reported its first three coronavirus cases on March 8 last while the first death on March 18.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) disclosed the information through a press release in the afternoon.

As per the press release, 1,442 more patients recuperated in the last 24 hours to take the total recoveries in the country to 324,145.

During the period, 11,532 samples were tested in 113 labs across the country. With this, a total of 2,336,262 samples have so far been tested in the country.

The positivity rate — an indicator of the prevalence of the disease — was recorded at 11.45 percent in the last 24 hours while the overall positivity rate is 17.45 percent.

The recovery rate continued to rise in Bangladesh reaching 79.51 percent.

Bangladesh has one of the lowest case fatality rates or CFR, which measures deaths among Covid-19 patients, at 1.45 percent.

On Friday, Bangladesh registered 19 deaths and 1,604 infections from coronavirus after testing 14,141 samples with a positivity rate of 11.34 percent.


Meanwhile, the world continued to break the record for most coronavirus cases in a single day registering 600,039 cases over the last 24 hours till 10am on Saturday.

In total, the reported infections from the virus have surged to 45,921,698 worldwide.

Besides, the virus has claimed the lives of 1,193,909 people, including 7,666 during the period, across the world, according to tracking website Worldometer. 

Of the currently infected 11,475,571 patients, 11,392,125 are in mild condition while 83,446 are in serious or critical condition.

So far, 33,252,218 people have made recovery from the disease in different countries. Of them, 259,022 recuperated in the last 24 hours.

The US is the worst-hit country with highest cases and deaths in the world at 9,316,297 and 235,159 respectively while India has 2nd highest cases of 8,137,119 and third highest fatalities of 121,681 and Brazil has 2nd highest deaths of 159,562 and third highest cases of 5,519,528.
